Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I would like to book a gerontology session to talk about some challenges I am facing with my Father but he has memory loss and I feel it would be difficult for him to follow along in the session. Does he need to be present at a Gerontology Session?

Answer: The older adult does not have to present at the session.

Question: Do I need a referral to book a Gerontology Session?

Answer: While we do get many referrals from health professionals and service providers, we do not require a referral to book our services.

Question: What is the difference between Gerontology and Geriatrics?

Answer: Gerontology is the study of aging and older adults. Gerontologists use a multidisciplinary view of and approach to aging considering the physical, mental and social aspects and implications of aging. Geriatrics is a medical speciality focused on care and treatment of older adults as they age.  Although each has a different focus, both have a goal of understanding aging to maximize functioning to keep older adults happy, healthy and thriving.

Question: My parents seem to be “okay” right now. How can your services help us now?

Answer: We have learned from many clients that it is never “too early” to learn about what resources are available for older adults and to have a plan in place that allows you to easily access services when and if a sudden or urgent crisis occurs. Learning about services when your parents are still “okay” is always encouraged.

Question: My parents are very uneasy about asking for help and would be uncomfortable meeting in-person to talk about their challenges. Can I meet with you on my own?

Answer: Our services are meant to help anyone who supports and cares for older adults. We can certainly meet with you on your own to put a plan in place to support your parents.

Question: What would be an example of a Gerontology “Working Session”?

Answer: Working Sessions are time blocks for our team to complete tasks on our own on your behalf. We have helped clients with generating a personalized list of seniors homes based on their preferences in a specific location; researching transportation options for an older adult to get to and from bi-weekly art classes; moving a parent from her home to an Independent Seniors Living Residence, creating a financial and legal tasks checklist and shopping for and dropping off groceries.
